Today’s featured tech tip….
Did you know hackers used to be the good guys?
When you hear the term ‘hacker’ you probably envision some guy hiding out in his parents’ basement spending every waking minute trolling around the web looking for online accounts and websites to ‘hack’ into.
And truth be told, as the term is used to today you’d be pretty close to the mark with that vision.
But guess what? Being referred to as a ‘hacker’ used to be a positive thing…
Back in the early days of home computing hackers were the guys who taught themselves to program the computers of the day and ‘hack’ certain software programs to make them more useful in some way.
To be called a hacker was actually a badge of honor of sorts, and during those early years hackers were responsible for some of the most important innovations in computer software.
But then along came the Internet…
As the web began to become available to the masses, an entirely new type of hacker was born.
All of a sudden lots of people with bad intentions discovered that they could access the computer systems and online accounts of others with just a few clicks and keystrokes. And human nature being what it is, the bad hackers quickly outnumbered the good by a huge margin.
While there are still plenty of good, ethical hackers out there, the explosive proliferation of bad ones has caused the term ‘hacker’ to fall into a state of disrepute.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
