Today’s featured tech tip….
Q&A: How do I change the password on my Chromebook?
Question from Eileen: I sometimes let my 12 year old son use my Chromebook for schoolwork, but I always sign in to the Chromebook myself and then turn the machine over to him. I do it that way because I don’t want him using it without me knowing about it.
I came home from work yesterday and caught him using my Chromebook even though I know for certain that I logged out of it the last time I used it. That means he must know the sign-in password.
How do I change the password on my Chromebook?
Rick’s answer: It’s easy to change your Chromebook’s password, Eileen. All you have to do is change the password to the Google account that’s associated with the machine.
Your Google password is the master password to every Google service you use, whether it’s Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube… And yes, that also includes your Chromebook.
Luckily, it’s very easy to change your Google password (which will automatically change your Chromebook sign-in password as well). You’ll find step-by-step instructions on this Google Help page.
Note 1: That same page also has instructions for resetting your Google password if you ever forget it. For that reason I recommend that you bookmark it in case you ever need to revisit it at some point in the future.
Note 2: The fact that your son was able to crack your password could mean it was a weak one to begin with. I recommend that you take a few moments to read this page that explains how to create a password that’s hard to break, yet easy to remember.
