How (and when) to temporarily pause Windows Updates

Have you ever been using your Windows PC to complete an important task when a notification popped up saying the machine was about to restart to install a pending Windows Update?

If so, you probably scrambled to try to finish the task before the system automatically started shutting down. And there might have been times when you weren’t able to finish up in time.

This is just one of many common scenarios in which you might want to force Windows to wait a while before restarting in order to install pending updates.

Luckily, there’s an easy way to quickly pause the installation of Windows Updates until a time that’s more convenient for you. Here’s how:

1 – Click the Start button and type the word updates.

2 – Select Check for updates from the list of search results.

3 – Click Pause for 1 week.

That’s all there is to it. You have just told Windows to wait one week before installing any new updates. You can now go ahead and take your time completing the important task(s) that you’re working on.

At this point you have the option of doing nothing and allowing the system to automatically resume updates after the week-long pause has passed, but you can also click the Resume updates button at any time to allow Windows to go ahead and proceed with the installation of pending updates.

In other words, you don’t have to actually force the machine to wait a week (or even an hour for that matter).

There are other ways to temporarily pause the installation of updates, but this my preferred method because it provides plenty of time to finish any tasks that you really need to get done before your PC shuts down and restarts.
