Today’s featured tech tip….
Should you really mount a TV above your fireplace?
Are you thinking about mounting your TV above your fireplace?
Truth be told, they usually look amazing there but there are several serious issues with that otherwise awesome location…
First, you’ll need to physically mount the TV onto the brick or stone wall of the fireplace.
This could easily be done by drilling a few holes and installing a VESA mounting bracket, but do you really want to drill holes into the face of your expensive fireplace?
It’s certainly fine if you do (it’s your house, after all), but you might want to reconsider that option if you plan on selling your home at some point.
Another consideration is the viewing angle. Depending on how far away from the TV you’ll be sitting, you could well end up with a stiff/sore neck every time you spend some time looking up at the TV.
And finally, there’s the issue of heat…
The purpose of a fireplace is to generate heat, right? And what does heat do when it’s released into the air?
It rises of course, and if you mount your TV above your fireplace the heat will be rising (and collecting) directly at the front of the TV.
And as you probably know, electronic devices don’t handle high temperatures very well. That means the electronic components inside your above-the-fireplace mounted TV will likely end up failing prematurely.
Now all of the above being said, if your desire to mount your TV above your fireplace over-rides all other considerations, I say go for it. It’s your TV and your house and you deserve to enjoy them however you see fit.
All I’m saying is you might want to carefully consider the downsides before you make your final decision.
