Today’s featured tech tip….
Why you MUST protect your email account from hackers
Ask most anyone to list their most important online accounts and they’ll probably place their banking and other financial accounts at the top of the list, for obvious reasons.
It’s also a pretty good bet that their email account will be listed pretty low in the list, probably after their social media and video streaming accounts.
But guess what? It’s your email account that should be listed above pretty much everything else.
Why? Because your email account is the skeleton key to so many other types of accounts.
Think about this for a moment…
When you forget the password to one of your accounts you click a “Forgot password?” link (or something similar), right?
And what do they almost always ask for at the beginning of the password reset process?
That’s right – your email address.
Once you have entered the email address that’s associated with that account they’ll send you an email with a link you can click to reset your password.
The thing is, if you can use your email account to reset the passwords to your other important accounts, so could any hacker who manages to somehow break into your email account.
That’s why it’s so important to take steps to ensure that your email account is secure from hacking attempts. Here are a few tips that can help:
1 – Choose a password for your email account that’s strong, yet easy to remember.
2 – Make sure you never share that password with anyone you wouldn’t trust with the key to your house or control of your ATM card.
3 – If your email provider supports it, enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) on your account (most of them do nowadays).
4 – If your email provider doesn’t support 2FA you should seriously consider switching to one that does.
5 – Don’t fall for fraudulent phishing emails that attempt to trick you into handing over the password to your email account.
6 – Don’t enter your email password into a fake login page for Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL Mail or any other email service. Always visit their login page directly from a known-good URL and login to your account from there.
That pretty much sums it up. Doing everything you can to protect your email account from hackers will go a long way towards protecting all of your other important accounts.
