Sometimes it can seem like your PC’s volume control has a mind of its own.
For example, have you ever turned the volume up to a comfortable level while listening to music only to have your ears blasted to oblivion the next time an ad started playing in your web browser?
That’s happened to me more than once, and I almost jumped out of my skin of every time!
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You can take control of the sounds emanating from your computer’s speakers and avoid unpleasant surprises.
Windows has a special tool that allows you to adjust the volume for individual programs to match your personal preferences.
The Windows Volume Mixer makes it easy to set a custom volume level for every program that’s running on your computer, and it’s very easy to access and use. All you have to do is right-click on the Volume icon in the “Notifications” area of the taskbar, then click Open Volume Mixer.
A dialog box will open up with various slider controls. Simply drag the sliders up and down to adjust the volume for each program to your liking. You can also raise or lower the volume for Windows’ standard system sounds.
Note: You can also use the Volume Mixer to “mute” individual programs and apps. Just click the “Speaker” icon beneath the program or app you wish to mute. Click it again to turn off the mute setting.
As you can see, this is a very simple process that allows you to take complete control over the volume of each individual program without affecting the volume of the others.
Bonus tip: You can protect your child against hearing loss by giving them a set of volume limiting headphones.
