Today’s featured tech tip….
Why you should never put suspicious files in the Recycle Bin/Trash Can
Most people simply delete potentially malicious files when they encounter them, but that can be a dangerous thing to do.
Why? Because deleted files aren’t actually deleted outright – they’re simply placed in a special folder on the machine’s hard drive or SSD (called the “Recycle Bin” on a Windows machine or the “Trash Can” on a Mac).
And as with the files in any folder, the files in those special “trash” folders are still accessible to the user – and they are still capable of executing, which can be quite bad if one of the files is infected with malware.
That’s why it’s best to never delete a file and allow it to land in the Recycle Bin or the Trash Can.
Luckily, it’s very easy to delete potentially dangerous files outright and skip those “trash” folders altogether…
If you have a Windows machine you can simply click on the file to select it then press the Shift+Delete key combination.
If you have a Mac just select the file you want to delete and press the Option+Command+Delete key combination.
