Today’s featured tech tip….
Beware this very dangerous ‘package delivery’ scam
Hackers and scammers have been using email to trick innocent recipients into falling for scams for decades, but now that virtually everyone has a smartphone they’re also spreading their scams via SMS text messages.
One of the most common text message scams involves a fake ‘package delivery’ notice, and now that we’re in the midst of the holiday shopping season the scammers are working overtime to take advantage of it.
The wording of these scams varies a bit, but they all work pretty much the same way…
You receive a text that appears to be from a package delivery service claiming they’ve found an undelivered package that’s addressed to you, and they’d like to complete the delivery.
However, in order to complete the delivery they need for you to enter your name, address, email address, phone number and other miscellaneous info into a form on their website to verify both your identity and your delivery address.
The problem is that form is actually a tool used to collect your personal info, which the scammers will either use themselves for nefarious means or sell to other scammers.
Bottom line: If you receive a text message claiming that you need to fill out a form in order to claim an undelivered package, it’s a scam. Just delete the message and forget about it.
Whatever you do, don’t interact with the message in any way except for deleting it.
If you respond to the message in any way your phone number will get added to an “Active Numbers” spam list and you’ll start receiving an avalanche of spam text messages and phone calls.
