Today’s featured tech tip….
Force your browser to always use a secure encrypted connection
The vast majority of websites now provide encrypted connections to protect your data and personal info from getting intercepted by hackers, but unfortunately the encryption isn’t automatically enabled on some of them.
On those partially protected sites you’ll get a secure encrypted connection if you begin the URL with https but an insecure non-encrypted connection if the URL begins with http (notice the missing s on the end).
Luckily, most major web web browsers now provide an option in the Settings for forcing the browser to establish a secure encrypted connection on every website that provides one.
This short video shows how to enable HTTPS encrypted mode in both Chrome and Firefox for all sites that provide a secure encrypted connection.
Note: You can watch this video at full screen by clicking the little “square” icon in the lower-right corner of the video after it begins playing.
Do you prefer following written instructions? Here you go…
Here’s how to set it up in Google Chrome:
1 – Click the three vertical dots in the top-right corner of the Chrome window, then select Settings from the menu.
2 – In the left-hand pane, click Privacy and security.
3 – Scroll down to the “Advanced” section and toggle the “Always use secure connections” setting to On.
And here’s how to set it up in Firefox:
1 – Click the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner of the Firefox window, then select Settings from the menu.
2 – Scroll all the way to the bottom and select Enable HTTPS-Only Mode in all windows.
That’s all there is to it. From now on every time you visit a website with either Chrome or Firefox you can rest assured that you’ll be using a secure encrypted connection if the websites provides one.
