How to use the same USB flash drive with both PCs and Macs
Have you ever tried to use the same USB flash drive on both a PC and a Mac? If so, you probably discovered that it didn’t work out very well.
But as luck would have it, there’s a very simple way to make one of these incredibly handy drives work with both types of machines: reformat it to use the ExFat file system.
You can use either a PC or a Mac to reformat the drive, but the procedure varies depending on which machine is doing the formatting.
If you’re formatting the drive with a Mac:
1 – Attach the drive to the Mac.
2 – Click Finder.
3 – Click Applications.
4 – Click Utilities.
5 – Click Disk Utility.
6 – Select the drive you wish to format in the left-hand sidebar.
7 – Click Erase.
8 – From the “Format” menu, select ExFAT.
9 – From the “Scheme” menu, select Master Boot Record.
10 – Click Erase and then follow the prompts to confirm.
If you’re formatting the drive with a Windows PC:
1 – Attach the drive to the PC.
2 – Press the Windows+E key combination to open a “File Explorer” window.
3 – Right-click on the drive you wish to format.
4 – Click Format.
5 – Select ExFat from the drop-down menu in the “File System” field.
6 – Click Start and wait for the formatting process to complete.
That’s all there is to it. Regardless of whether the drive was formatted with a Windows PC or a Mac you’ll now be able to use it with both types of machines with no worries about switching back and forth between the two.
