Today’s quick tech tip….
Prevent users from installing third-party apps on a Windows 11 PC
Do you often find yourself having to fix problems that arise after your child or someone else installs some random app from a sketchy download site?
This is a common problem for most anyone who serves as an informal “tech support” rep for kids, relatives, friends or close neighbors.
Unfortunately, many third-party apps are dangerous, either intentionally or as a result of poor coding.
That’s why Microsoft recommends installing apps only from the official Microsoft Store.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a few really good download sites out there that only provide high-quality, safe software downloads (OlderGeeks.com being my favorite).
If you know your way around a PC well enough to provide informal tech support services to other users, you’re probably savvy enough to avoid the “bad neighborhood” download sites and safely install apps that won’t cause problems for your machine.
That being said, if you constantly find yourself having to fix problems caused by someone else installing a bad third-party app, you might want to consider blocking third-party app installations and restricting installs to apps that are only available from the Microsoft Store.
Luckily, this is very easy to do. Check out my short YouTube video that shows how, step-by-step.
If you prefer following written instructions, here you go:
First, right-click on the Start button and select Settings from the menu.
Next, in the left-hand pane, click Apps and then select Advanced app settings over on the right.
Now change the “Choose where to get apps” setting to The Microsoft Store only.
That’s all there is to it. From now on the person who uses this PC will only be allowed to install apps that are available from the official Microsoft Store.
