Today’s quick tech tip….
Format a USB drive to work with both PCs and Macs
If you use both Windows PCs and Macs you’ve probably noticed that sharing USB drives between the two is a bit problematic, for a very simple reason…
By default, Windows PCs and Macs use a different file system when you format a drive.
But guess what? You can easily format an external USB hard drive, SSD or flash drive using a file system that both machines can read from and write to.
This flexible file format is called exFAT, and it’s usable by both Windows PCs and Mac desktops and MacBooks.
Here’s how to format a drive with exFat to make it usable with either type of computer:
Note: You can format a drive using exFAT with either type of machine, but it’s faster and easier with a PC.
1 – Plug the drive you want to use with both PCs and Macs into an open USB port on a Windows PC.
2 – Press the Windows+E key combination to open a “File Explorer” window.
3 – Click on This PC.
4 – Right-click on the drive you want to format and select Format from the menu.
5 – Click the box in the “File system” field and select exFAT.
6 – Click Start, then click OK to acknowledge the warning message.
7 – After the format is complete, click OK and then close out the remaining boxes.
That’s all there is to it. Now you can use that drive in both Windows PCs and Macs with no worries about incompatibility issues.
