Today’s quick tech tip….
Facebook to remove Political and Religious views from user profiles
It’s no secret that Facebook mines data from user profiles and uses it to sell targeted ads, and some of that info can be rather intrusive.
The thing is, this info was provided willingly by the users themselves.
Although Facebook provides fields for a wide variety of demographic data, most of those fields are entirely optional. If don’t want to include the info requested for a field you can simply leave it blank.
But guess what? Plenty of folks are willing to share with the Facebook universe most any type of info that’s requested.
Facebook’s parent company Meta has decided to remove two of the most sensitive data items from users’ personal profiles due to privacy concerns.
On December 1, 2022, Facebook will start removing both the “Political Views” and “Religious Views” fields from users’ Profile pages.
Once those changes are rolled out users will no longer have the option to include that info on their profiles, which of course means advertisers will no longer be able to target their ads to users based upon those particular demographic data points.
Personally, I’m all for any change that enhances privacy, and this one will.
I’d love to hear your opinion about this change. Just hit the Reply button and tell me how you feel about it.
