Today’s quick tech tip….
Will using a VPN protect your device from malware?
Every now and then someone will ask me if using a VPN will protect their computer or mobile device from malware.
I received another of those emails this morning, which got me to thinking maybe I should answer that question here.
So, will a VPN protect the device it’s running on from malware? Well, no.
While a VPN can help cover your tracks and enhance your privacy by encrypting your Internet traffic, it cannot and will not prevent malware from being downloaded onto your machine.
Why? Because even when using a VPN, your device is still accessing whatever files are stored on a remote server.
If one or more of those files is malicious your VPN won’t prevent it from travelling through the secure VPN “tunnel” and infecting your device.
That’s why it always pays to surf the web with safety and security in mind.
