Today’s quick tech tip….
How to clear a stuck ‘Checking for updates’ message in Windows
If you have a Windows PC you’re probably used to checking periodically to see if there are any new Windows Updates available for your machine.
You know the drill – you open the Windows Update Manager tool and it says “Checking for updates…” until it either finds some and starts downloading them or it tells you there were no new updates found.
As you probably know, the Windows Update procedure has always been a bit flaky, and sometimes it just freezes up completely and keeps saying ‘Checking for updates’ till the proverbial cows come home.
Luckily, it’s pretty easy to clear a stuck ‘Checking for updates’ message. Here’s how:
1 – Click the Start button and type services.msc into the search box, then click Services after it pops up in the search results.
2 – Scroll down the list of services until you find Windows Update.
3 – Right-click on Windows Update and click Stop.
4 – Right-click on Windows Update again and click Start.
5 – Click the X in the top right corner of the window to close the Services dialog box.
That’s all there is to it. The stuck ‘Checking for updates’ message should now be cleared.
