Beware scam sellers on Facebook Marketplace

Facebook Marketplace is used by millions of people every day to buy, sell and trade most anything you can think of.

And truth be told, if you do your homework and find out what things are really worth, you can snag some pretty awesome deals on there.

But sadly, there’s a dark side to Facebook Marketplace too: scammers…

As with Facebook itself, scammers are in abundance on Facebook Marketplace.

You’ll see them listing expensive items for ridiculously low prices. Sometimes they’ll list things that are in high demand and short supply, at inflated prices (that old supply and demand thing, right?).

The old saying “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is” certainly applies to many of the “deals” on Facebook Marketplace.

Here are a few things to look out for:

1 – The scammer will insist on getting paid electronically via PayPal or with gift cards (to tie up the deal until you can meet to exchange the merchandise). If you receive such a request, don’t do it.

2 – The scammer shows up at the agreed-upon meeting place, only to “discover” that he forgot to bring the item. He says to just go ahead and pay him (again, to tie up the deal) and he’ll bring the item back to you at a later time. Don’t fall for it.

3 – The scammer asks for your mailing address and phone number so he can ship the item to you. What he’ll do instead is use that info plus whatever other info he can scrape together online to steal your identity.

The tips above can help you avoid getting scammed. The ones below can help you stay safe…

1 – Never meet a seller alone. Always bring along a trusted friend (or even better, two).

2 – Only agree to meet in a public place where you know there will be lots of other people around AND the area will be covered by security cameras – and during daylight hours.

3 – Don’t allow a stranger to come to your home (and again, never give out your address).

4 – Only bring enough cash with you to pay for the purchase (don’t tempt a potential robber).
