Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: Can you recommend a good source for info about converting to solar power?
Question from Thomas: With the ever-rising cost of electricity, my wife and I are seriously thinking about taking our home off-grid by installing solar panels on our roof.
The thing is we have no clue about how solar power systems work, how expensive they are or even if it would pay off in the long run.
Can you recommend a really good resource for learning the things we need to know about converting our home to solar?
In order to save money on the installation we’d love to be able to install everything ourselves. I’m hoping the info you point us to will cover the installation in detail.
We don’t mind paying a reasonable fee to access the info if need be.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Rick’s answer: Thomas, I have a feeling a lot of people are going to end up converting their homes to solar in the near future for the very reason you stated.
Luckily, YouTube has a wealth of information about solar power readily available for the taking.
YouTube hosts thousands of videos on solar power, but you’ll find everything you need on just one super-fantastic channel: DIY Solar Power with Will Prowse
In my humble opinion, Will is the ultimate expert and guru for everything solar.
His videos are easy to follow and understand, and they cover everything there is to know about planning, purchasing and installing the solar setup that best suits your needs and budget.
I don’t believe I’m exaggerating a bit when I say if Will’s channel was a college course it would easily qualify as graduate level material.
I recommend that you and your wife spend a few days or weeks (depending on how busy your schedules are) watching every video on Will’s channel. I believe it’ll be time well spent.
And by the way, you will definitely be able to install your solar power system yourself after watching Will’s videos. You’ll learn everthing you need to know, trust me.
Best of luck to you and your wife as you make the transition from the grid to solar power.
