Today’s quick tech tip….
Should your computer have 32GB of RAM?
I’ve noticed that more and more new computers are being sold with a 32GB RAM option these days, but do you really need that much?
Well, let me start by saying that more RAM is never worse than less RAM.
After all, having more RAM than you really need gives your machine some breathing room in case you ever need to start running more RAM-hungry programs and apps.
The thing is, extra RAM is expensive, especially when you consider that most of the computers that come with 32GB (or more) also tend to have top-of-the-line CPUs and other premium components that can really jack up the cost in a hurry.
In my humble opinion the average computer user doesn’t need 32GB of RAM. They just don’t.
If you buy a machine that has a 32GB option you can always upgrade later should the need arise.
Of course if you do a lot of video editing and/or other tasks that can actually make effective use of the extra RAM, then you should definitely go for it.
But if all you do is read your favorite blogs, keep up with your friends on social media and check your email once or twice a day, you can easily get by with either 8GB or 16GB.
Right now 16GB seems to be the sweet spot, so if cost isn’t your primary concern I do recommend that you go with that amount.
But 32GB? You’ll probably be just fine if you take a pass.
