Today’s quick tech tip….
What to do when something goes wrong with your device
These days virtually everyone has a computer, a smartphone, a tablet or some other high-tech gadget, and as you might expect, things occasionally go wrong with them.
The thing is, it’s easy to actually make things worse while you’re trying to troubleshoot the issue.
Clicking this and tapping that often introduces even more problems, making it even more difficult to get to the root of the original issue.
The next time something goes wrong, try these potential fixes:
1 – Just sit for a couple of minutes and think about what you did (if anything) right before the problem occurred.
Did you click a link in an email or on an unfamiliar website?
If so, there’s a strong possibility that the problem could be malware. To find out, run a couple of malware scans with your full-time antivirus app and the free version of Malwarebytes.
2 – Did you install a new app or browser extension? If you did, the newly-installed software might be buggy, incompatible with your device or the apps that are installed on it, or even riddled with malware.
To find out, first uninstall the app or extension and see if the problem goes away. If it doesn’t, run the scans mentioned in #1 above.
3 – It could be a temporary glitch. Try saving any unsaved files that you might be working on and then restart the device to see if that clears it up.
4 – It could be a hardware problem. If you suspect that it is, check the Internet forums that deal with hardware issues for computers and mobile devices. A great place to start is DSL Reports Forums.
If the brand and model of your device has a known reliability issue you’ll probably find one or more forum threads discussing it.
And even if there is no widespread issue like the one you’re experiencing, the savvy readers at DSL Reports can probably help you do some basic troubleshooting in order to figure out what’s causing the problem.
