Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: How do you make a file ‘Read Only’ in Windows 10?
Question from Phillip: I have a Notepad file that contains a bunch of text snippets that I access every time I need to copy one of the snippets and paste it into a document.
These snippets are exactly the way I want them, but every now and then I’ll accidentally change one of them and end up having to change it back.
How can I make this file ‘Read Only” to prevent me from accidentally making changes to it?
Rick’s answer: I know exactly what you’re talking about, Phillip.
I also keep a couple of text files on my desktop that I access on a regular basis, and I know how frustrating it is to suddenly realize you’ve changed something without meaning to.
Luckily, it’s extremely easy to make a file ‘Read Only’ in Windows 10. Here’s how:
1 – Right-click on the file and select Properties from the drop-down menu.
2 – Check the box beside “Read-only”, then click Apply.
3 – Click OK.
That’s all there is to it. The next time you accidentally make a change to that text file, Windows won’t allow you to save it.
