Today’s quick tech tip….
Q&A: How do I stop pages from automatically reloading in Edge?
Question from Pat: One of the websites I use the most has the very annoying habit of automatically reloading the current page, usually when I’m in the middle of reading a long article.
When that happens I have to scroll back down the page and find the place where I left off, then resume reading from that point.
If it’s a long article I might have to do this several times before I get everything read.
Is there a way to stop this? I went through Edge’s settings with a fine tooth comb but I couldn’t find a setting that looked like it would stop the reloading.
Rick’s answer: I know exactly what you’re talking about, Pat. That happens on a couple of sites that I enjoy visiting as well so I know how irritating it can be.
Those automatic page reloads are cause by a setting called “Auto-Refresh” and there’s a reason why you couldn’t find it in Edge’s Settings: It isn’t in there.
For whatever reason, Microsoft decided to place the “Auto-Refresh” setting in the Control Panel’s “Internet Options” dialog, not in the browser itself.
Luckily, it’s very easy to find once you know where to look. Just follow the steps below:
1 – Click the Start button and immediately start typing the words control panel.
2 – Click on Control Panel as soon as it shows up in the search results.
3 – Click Network and Internet.
4 – Click Internet Options to launch the “Internet Properties” dialog.
5 – Select the Security tab.
6 – Click the Custom level… button to launch the “Security Settings – Internet Zone” dialog.
7 – Caution: Be extremely careful with this step…
Scroll down the list until you find the “Allow META REFRESH” setting, then select the Disable radio button just below it.
Important: Make sure you don’t make any changes to anything besides that one setting or your Edge browser could stop working as expected.
8 – After you’ve disabled the “Allow META REFRESH” setting, click the OK button.
9 – Go back into the “Internet Properties” dialog and click Apply, then click OK.
10 – Close both the Internet Properties and Control Panel dialog boxes.
That’s all there is to it. From now on you shouldn’t have to worry about the page automatically refreshing on you while you’re trying to read an article in your Edge browser.
