Five incredibly useful Windows keyboard shortcuts
If you use a Windows PC you probably know there are literally dozens of handy keyboard shortcuts you can use to make quick work of many common Windows tasks without having to remove your hands from the keyboard to use the mouse.
The thing is, most people have trouble remembering more than a just a few of them.
A a blogger, I probably use my computer more than most other folks use theirs, so I’ve probably committed more keyboard shortcuts to memory than average. But still, I don’t remember anywhere near the entire selection that’s available.
But as luck would have it, there’s really no need to…
Most of the available shortcuts are rarely used so it makes little sense trying to remember them all.
However, there’s a small handful of super-handy keyboard shortcuts that can really make your life a lot easier if you commit them to memory and use them on a regular basis:
1 – Ctrl+Z
Without a doubt, this is my favorite keyboard shortcut of all, by far.
Pressing Ctrl+Z will undo the last action you took in most any program or app that runs on your PC.
What’s more, you can press Ctrl+Z repeatedly to undo multiple actions, not just the last action you took.
2 – Ctrl+Y
This is the exact opposite of Ctrl+Z. If you press Ctrl+Y it will “redo” the undo that you just made.
And of course, like Ctrl+Z, you can press Ctrl+Y repeatedly to “redo” multiple undos.
3 – F5
Want to quickly refresh the web page that’s displayed in your browser without removing your hands from the keyboard? Press the F5 key.
4 – Ctrl+A
Want to select everything in the current window so you can copy it, cut it or perform some other task with it? Press Ctrl+A.
5 – Windows+E
Want to open a File Explorer dialog with a simple key combination? Press Windows+E.
Note: On most Windows keyboards, the Windows key is located between the Ctrl and Alt keys in the lower-left corner of the keyboard.
There you have it. These are the five keyboard shortcuts that I find most useful when using a Windows PC.
Do you have a favorite keyboard shortcut that isn’t on my list? I’d love to hear about it. Just hit the “Reply” button on this email and let me know.
