Today’s quick tech tip….
Heads-up: Those Norton & McAfee renewal emails are scams
I recently started receiving a flood of frantic emails from folks who are getting renewal “invoice” and “receipt” emails that appear to be from either Norton or McAfee.
The “invoices” arrive in the form of a bill. The recipients are prodded to enter their banking or card details into an online form to complete the payment for the supposed renewal fee.
The “receipt” emails claim that your account has already been debited for the supposed renewal fee, but you can cancel the transaction and request a refund simply by entering your banking or card info into a form.
Of course both of those email types are scams. They are nothing more than phishing attempts aiming to steal your banking or credit/debit card info.
Bottom line: If you receive any type of antivirus renewal email you’ll know right away that it’s a scam if you don’t even use that product.
And even if you do use the software mentioned in the email, the email itself is still virtually guaranteed to be a scam.
If you’re ever concerned that your antivirus subscription might be about to expire for real, simply log in to your account at that company’s website and check the billing status for your account.
