Today’s quick tech tip….
Warning: Your old data CDs and DVDs are going bad
If you owned a computer back in the days when it was common to store photos and other files on writable optical discs, there’s something you should know…
If you still have a stack of those old discs laying around the house, they are going to go bad on you, and probably sooner rather than later.
In fact, at least some of them might already be unreadable.
Like the magnetic discs that preceded them, CDs and DVDs degrade over time, eventually reaching the point where they are no longer usable.
That’s why you need to copy any files that you don’t want to lose off of your existing optical discs onto other, more modern forms of media.
For the time being you can copy the files onto either USB flash drives or external USB hard drives. Then you can copy them onto even newer forms of media when it becomes necessary to do so.
Back in the pre-digital era families would pass down boxes of precious family photos to the next generation, but those days are mostly gone. Now everything is digital.
And just like we had to protect those beloved physical photographs from fire and water damage, we now have to protect our digital images from the ravages of time.
Luckily, this is rather easy to accomplish…
If you have a laptop or desktop computer with an internal DVD drive you’re all set. Simply connect an external hard drive or USB flash drive to the machine, insert the first optical disc into the drive and start copying.
If you don’t have a computer with an internal optical drive, this post offers a very cheap, but extremely effective solution.
