Today’s Quick Tip….
How to turn your favorite website into a desktop app
Did you know there’s a very simple way to view your favorite website(s) without all the distractions you encounter when using a browser?
If you use either Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox on a laptop or desktop computer you can quickly transform virtually any website into a handy desktop app.
Truth be told, the site will still be displayed via the browser running in the background, but there won’t be an address bar, Bookmarks bar or many of the other typical browser elements to distract you from your reading.
In a nutshell, you’ll use and interact with the site the same way you’d use an actual app.
Want to give it a try? Just follow the steps below for the browser you’re using.
If you’re using Chrome:
1 – Open the site you want to create an app for in your Chrome browser.
2 – Click the Customize and control icon in the top-right corner of the window (it looks like three vertical dots).
3 – Click More tools, then select Create shortcut from the menu.
4 – Type a name for your new website app into the text box, then check the box beside “Open as window”.
5 – Click the Create button.
You should now have a shortcut for the new website app on your computer’s Desktop. Just click on it at any time to open that site as an app.
If you’re using Edge:
1 – Open the site you want to create an app for in your Edge browser.
2 – Click the Settings and more icon in the top-right corner of the window (it looks like three horizontal dots).
3 – Click Apps, then select Install this site as an app from the menu.
4 – Type a name for your new website app into the text box, then click the Install button.
The new app should now automatically open on the screen along with a dialog box containing a few options for you to select.
5 – You can choose any of the options available to you in the dialog box, but I recommend unchecking everything that’s already checked and then checking Create desktop shortcut.
6 – Click the Allow button.
You should now have a shortcut for the new website app on your computer’s Desktop. Just click on it at any time to open that site as an app.
