Do you have a used computer that you’re planning to sell?
If so, you might be wondering about what it’s worth so you can determine how much you should ask for it.
Or perhaps you’re planning to buy a used computer and you want to make sure you don’t over-pay?
Determining the actual value of an item used to be pretty difficult, but the Internet has given us a great tool that can give us that info in a hurry: Ebay!
Most anything and everything is sold on Ebay these days, and that includes used computers.
Just visit Ebay.com in your web browser or open the Ebay app on your phone or tablet, then search for the exact model of the computer that you’ll be selling.
For example, if you’re planning to sell a Dell XPS 13 just type that into the search box.
Once you have the search results on the screen, filter them to display just the items that have already been sold. Here’s how:
If you’re using Ebay in a web browser:
1 – With the search results on the screen, scroll down to the “Show Only” section in the left-hand column and select Sold Items.
2 – Look through the list of sold items and check the prices that each of those computers sold for. Narrow down your search as much as possible by trying to match the amount of RAM and hard drive/SSD storage space that your computer has in it.
3 – Average several of the sale prices to determine a good starting point for your asking price.
If you’re using the Ebay app on a mobile device:
1 – With the search results on the screen, tap the Filter option in the top-right corner of the screen.
2 – Scroll down and tap Show more.
3 – Toggle the “Sold Items” option to On.
4 – Tap Show [XX] results.
5 – Look through the list of sold items and check the prices that each of those computers sold for. Narrow down your search as much as possible by trying to match the amount of RAM and hard drive/SSD storage space that your computer has in it.
6 – Average several of the sale prices to determine a good starting point for your asking price.
Once you have a starting point for your asking price, adjust your price either up or down to reflect the condition of the computer you’re selling.
If it’s in excellent condition you can try selling it for the highest price listed among the items that were sold on Ebay.
If it’s in average condition you can price it at the price you came up with for the average.
However, if it’s in poor condition you’ll probably need to take off a few bucks.
That’s all there is to it. Now you know how to use Ebay to find out how much to ask for your used computer.
And you can use the same procedure to determine a fair price for a model that you’re planning to buy.
And by the way, you can use the procedure above to determine the approximate value of virtually any type of item.
Most everything it bought and sold on Ebay so you should be able to search for your item and find out what others have sold similar items for!
