Today’s Quick Tip….
Q&A: Can I disable the ‘Sleep’ button on my computer?
Question from Marnie: I have a computer with Windows 11 on it and the keyboard has a ‘Sleep’ button that’s real close to several keys that I use a lot.
I keep hitting that button by accident and putting the machine to sleep when I don’t mean to.
That button’s just in the way because I always just let the computer go to sleep on its own after I stop using it.
Is there any way to completely disable that ‘Sleep’ button? If so, how do I do it?
Rick’s answer: Yes, you can easily disable the ‘Sleep’ button on your computer, Marnie. Just follow the steps below:
1 – Click the Start button to display the Start menu, then start typing the words control panel.
2 – Click on Control Panel after it pops up in the search results.
3 – Click Hardware and Sound.
4 – Click Power Options.
5 – In the left-hand column, click Choose what the power buttons do.
6 – Change the “When I press the sleep button” setting(s) to Do nothing.
Note: If you have a laptop you’ll see two settings that you’ll need to change. If you have a desktop PC you’ll only have to change one.
That’s all there is to it. From now on your PC will keep right on chugging along when you accidentally press the ‘Sleep’ button.
