Today’s Quick Tip….
How (and why) to reset the ‘Settings’ app in Windows
As you probably know, the Windows ‘Settings’ app has dozens of different settings that you can tweak to make many Windows features and tools work more to your liking.
The thing is, over time the Settings app can get out of whack and cause issues with your system. And in rare cases, this all-important app will stop working at all.
And of course there could simply come a time when you just want to wipe out all of your settings changes and start over.
Luckily, both Windows 10 and Windows 11 make it easy to reset the Settings app so you can start over with a clean slate.
However, before I tell you how to do that, I need to tell you this…
Caution: Resetting the ‘Settings’ app will wipe out all the settings changes you’ve made since you first got your PC or installed its current version of Windows.
That means if you follow the instructions below you’ll need to go back into the app and make all of your desired settings changes over again.
Therefore, you really need to be sure you want to do this before making the decision to proceed.
Now that that’s out of the way, here’s how to reset the Settings app in Windows 10:
1 – Click the Start button to display the Start Menu.
2 – Right-click on the Settings icon (it looks like a “gear“), then click More>App settings.
3 – Scroll down and click the Reset button, then click Reset again to confirm that you really want to reset the app and all of the settings changes that you’ve made to date.
And here’s how to reset the Settings app in Windows 11:
1 – Click the Start button to display the Start Menu.
2 – Right-click on the Settings icon (it looks like a “gear“), then click App settings.
Note: At this point you have a choice to make…
The first option is to try to “repair” the Settings app to clear up any issues you might be having with it.
If successful, repairing the app will clear up the issues you’re having without actually resetting any of the settings that you’ve changed to date.
The second option is to just ‘go nuclear’ and completely reset the Settings app.
Resetting the app will give you a better chance of clearing up the issues you’re having, but it will also wipe out all of your existing settings changes.
If you wish to try repairing the app first, simply scroll down in the right-pane and click the Repair button.
If you want to just go ahead and completely reset the app, scroll down and click the Reset button, then click Reset again to confirm that you really want to reset the app and all of the settings changes that you’ve made to date.
