Today’s Quick Tip….
How to save a list of your PC’s running processes to a file
Have you ever tried troubleshooting a Windows issue by examining all the currently running processes via the Task Manager?
If so, you know how difficult it can be to make heads or tails of things with the Task Manager running.
Well here’s a little tip that can help…
You can easily export a list of all the processes that are currently running on your PC to a text file and then examine that file in Notepad.
This can also come in handy if you’re on a Tech Support call and the tech on the other end needs to see exactly what’s running on your machine.
Follow the steps below to create this handy file:
1 – Click on the Start button, then type the letters CMD.
2 – Right-click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator from the context menu.
3 – Answer Yes to the “User Account Control” prompt.
4 – Copy and paste the following onto the command line:
tasklist>C:\running-services.txt
5 – Press the Enter key.
6 – Click the X in to top-right corner of the “Command Prompt” window to close it.
7 – Press the Windows+E key to open a “File Explorer” window.
8 – Click on the C: drive to view its contents.
9 – Open the running-services.txt file with Notepad to view the list of processes that were running when the file was created.
You can also copy this file to the Desktop or to another folder or attach it to an email or Tech Support chat message.
