Today’s Quick Tip….
How (and why) to opt out of Verizon’s ‘Custom Experience’ program
Are you a Verizon Wireless customer?
If so, you might be surprised to learn they collect information about your Internet and telephone usage every time you use your phone for virtually any purpose.
Verizon’s stated purpose for their two “Custom Experience” programs is to identify your likes and preferences so they can tailor the “content” (i.e. ads) they send you to match those likes and preferences.
Their Custom Experience Programs FAQs page says they don’t sell any data that identifies you in any way to a third party, but they also say they share that info with “service providers that work for us”.
The thing is, can those service providers (or Verizon itself) guarantee that the info they have collected about you will never be “shared” via a hack or data leak? Of course not.
Can they also guarantee that a rogue employee won’t steal your information and sell it on their own? Again, the answer is no.
Although you might feel differently, I prefer to keep as much of my personal info and activities as private as possible.
If you’re a Verizon Wireless customer and you feel the same way, you can opt out of their “Custom Experience” programs. Here’s how:
1 – Visit Verizon’s Privacy preferences page and sign in.
2 – Scroll down to the “Custom Experience” and “Custom Experience Plus” sections and select the options to opt out of both.
