Today’s Quick Tip….
Notepad gets a much-needed update on Windows 11
The Notepad app has been an essential part of Windows for decades, and it has changed very little over the years.
In fact, it’s look and feel is still more reminiscent of ancient DOS utilities than today’s Windows apps.
However, that’s beginning to change just a bit…
Microsoft recently rolled out a much-needed update to Notepad, and while it’s still quite basic compared to most Windows apps, these changes are quite beneficial.
First of all, Notepad’s “Find and Replace” tool has been updated with several new options. You can check them out by selecting Edit from the File menu and then clicking on the various Find and Replace related options.
Next, Microsoft has added rounded corners (which to me is no big deal) and a Dark Mode.
You’ll see the rounded corners right away when you open the app.
To give Dark Mode a try click the “gear” shaped Settings icon in the top-right corner of the Notepad window. Then click App theme and select the Dark option.
While you have the Settings screen open you can check out another major enhancement: updated font options. Just click on the word Font and you’ll see what’s now available to you.
And finally, there’s the most useful update of all for folks like me who use Notepad mainly as a scratchpad…
Microsoft has finally gotten around to giving Notepad a truly useful multi-level undo option.
You can use this new multi-level undo tool the same way you use it in any other Windows app. Just keep clicking Edit>Undo until you have reversed all the changes you want to reverse.
If you prefer using the keyboard simply press Ctrl+Z repeatedly until you’re done.
Bottom line: Notepad in Windows 11 is still Notepad instead of a full-blown word processor. But these latest updates sure make it a lot more useful.
