Why you should restart your computer every few days
I receive lots of tech questions every week, and there’s one that gets asked on a regular basis:
“Is it ok to leave my computer running all the time?“
The answer is no, it really isn’t. Here’s why…
Both Windows PCs and Macs tend to collect digital junk in their RAM storage areas over time, primarily from poorly-written programs and apps causing memory leaks and/or leaving parts of themselves behind in RAM when you close them out.
On top of that, transient glitches caused by power fluctuations can cause data corruption in isolated memory cells.
While these types of RAM issues typically go unnoticed by the user, they often subtly manifest themselves by causing system instability, system slow-downs and a wide variety of other issues.
And if the problem gets bad enough it can result in data loss, random reboots and other miscellaneous problems that can leave you both frustrated and confused.
Now all of the above begin said, it isn’t really necessary to restart your computer every single day.
Just one weekly restart (which I do every Saturday morning) should easily be enough to keep the digital gremlins at bay and prevent the types of issues I described above from occurring.
