Today’s Quick Tip….
Is Windows 10 going away in 2025?
Yesterday morning I received the following email from a nice reader named Diane:
“In your newsletter, would you please address the question: Is Windows 10 “going away” in 2025? Rumor has it that Windows 10 will no longer be the preferred version come 2025. Thank you.“
That’s a great question Diane, and I’ll be happy to answer it as best I can…
Microsoft has indeed designated Oct 14, 2025 as the official “Retirement Date” for Windows 10 according to their Windows 10 Life Cycle Schedule.
In a nutshell, that means they will be effectively abandoning Windows 10 on that date and stop releasing any further updates for it.
However, just because Microsoft will no longer be supporting Windows 10 with updates after it’s official retirement date, that doesn’t mean it’s going to go away (as in magically disappear from the PCs that are running it) in 2025.
Just as with all previous versions of Windows, any computers with Windows 10 still installed on them after October 14, 2025 will still work as they always did unless and until their owners replace Windows 10 with either Windows 11 or Linux.
The thing is, even though Windows 10 will still work the same way it always did, it won’t really be safe to use after its official retirement because none of the security holes that will inevitably be discovered after that date will receive patches from Microsoft.
Bottom line: Windows 10 won’t “be going away” in 2025, but it won’t really be a good idea to keep using it after Microsoft stops supporting it with updates.
And the rumor that “Windows 10 will no longer be the preferred version come 2025” is actually true, for the reasons stated above.
