Today’s Quick Tip….
Why you still need to make local backups if you use a cloud backup service
Cloud backup services like iDrive and Carbonite are awesome because they make backing up your data ridiculously easy and they store those backups off-site.
That’s why I always recommend using a cloud backup service as part of an overall backup plan.
I’m often asked whether it’s wise to still create and store backups locally even when using a cloud backup service.
Well, my answer is always a big yes. Here are three reasons why:
1 – While cloud backups are great, they are useless if your Internet happens to be down when you need to complete a restore. And in some places, Internet outages can last for days at a time due to widespread storm damage or other factors.
2 – When it comes time to restore your system from a backup, you’ll likely be able to complete the process a lot faster by restoring from a local backup drive instead of over the Internet.
3 – When it comes to backups, redundancy is your very best friend.
Have you ever considered what would happen if your cloud backup service were to literally be destroyed by a tornado, hurricane or other natural disaster (perhaps even the same disaster that causes your data loss in the first place)?
Or what if the company were to go bankrupt and simply close up shop with no warning?
Bottom line: Always keeping a recent local backup on hand to augment your cloud backups will help ensure that you always have a backup to quickly restore from even if things go south with the cloud backup service or your Internet connection.
