Apple has just announced a recall of certain MacBook Pro laptops due to faulty batteries that could overheat and start a fire.
Most (but not all) of the faulty batteries were installed in MacBook Pros that were sold between September 2015 and February 2017.
Luckily, only one specific model is affected by the recall.
Follow these steps to find out if your laptop is one of them:
1 – Click the Apple icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
2 – Click About This Mac.
3 – Check to see if the model listed is MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015).
4 – If that’s indeed the model of your MacBook Pro you’ll need to follow the instructions on this page to retrieve your laptop’s serial number.
5 – Type your laptop’s serial number into the box on this page and click the Submit button to find out if your MacBook Pro is included in the recall.
If you determine that your laptop has been recalled, Apple will replace the defective battery for you at no charge. You’ll find instructions for arranging the battery replacement at the link in the above paragraph.
Bottom line: While this recall is voluntary, I recommend that you ask Apple to replace the defective battery in your laptop ASAP.
Defective Lithium-Ion batteries are very dangerous and they have indeed been known to cause fires.
