I’m often asked if I’d be willing to recover the photos and other files from a “dead” laptop or desktop computer.
I typically refer them to this post that explains how to retrieve their files themselves, but some folks prefer to pay me to do the job for them because they don’t want to take a chance on accidentally trashing their files.
I provide this service because I know how important precious photos and other irreplaceable files can be to their owners.
Here’s the deal…
My fee for recovering your photos and other files from a dead PC’s hard drive and shipping them back to you on an external USB hard drive is $75.
The fee for recovering the files from additional computers is an additional $50 per drive.
For example, the fee for recovering the files from two PCs (i.e. two hard drives) will be $125 ($75 for the first drive and $50 for second one).
The fee for recovering the files from three PCs will be $175…and so forth.
Getting the computer or its removed hard drive to me…
You’ll need to ship the dead computer or (preferably) just the bare hard drive you removed from it to me along with a working external USB hard drive that’s large enough to hold all the files that are to be recovered from the dead machine.
Note: The shipping charge will almost certainly be a lot cheaper if you send just the bare hard drive, but you can ship the entire machine to me if that’s easier for you. Whatever works best for you is fine.
Choosing the right size external USB hard drive to hold your recovered files…
In most cases a 1TB USB hard drive will be large enough, but if there’s any doubt I can help you determine how large a drive you’ll need to send based upon the size of the dead machine’s hard drive and the number of files that are stored on it.
Right now a 1TB external USB hard drive (#ad) will likely cost you around $50, and you’ll be able to use that drive for other purposes (like backing up your PC’s hard drive) after I return the drive to you with your recovered files on it.
Returning the drives to you…
I’ll pay the shipping fee for sending both the external USB hard drive containing the recovered photos and files and the dead PC’s original hard drive back to you.
Note: If you want the entire dead computer returned to you I’ll need for you to cover the shipping costs. If not, I’ll be happy to recycle it for you at no extra charge.
Making the arrangements…
