Question from Paula L.: I used to only see notifications from Windows Defender once or twice a day, but after I installed the Windows 10 Anniversary Update I started seeing a lot more of them.
Why am I getting so many Windows Defender notifications all of a sudden? They’re beginning to get on my nerves! Is there any way to mute them?
Rick’s answer: As you have discovered Paula, the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 came with a new “Enhanced Notifications” feature.
When the Enhanced Notifications feature is enabled, Windows Defender will notify you of many actions that used to take place quietly in the background. And as with most any major change to Windows, lots of users love it while plenty of others simply despise it.
Since you aren’t all that keen on it, you’ll be glad to know that it’s very easy to turn Enhanced Notifications off. Here’s how:
1 – Click the Start button.
2 – Click Settings.
3 – Click Update & security.
4 – Click the Windows Defender link that’s over in the left-hand column.
5 – Scroll down to “Enhanced Notifications” and toggle its setting to Off.
That’s all there is to it Paula. From now on you should only see critical notifications from Windows Defender that really need your immediate attention. All other activities should now take place quietly in the background.
