Today’s featured tech tip….
Don’t let social media sabotage your job / college search
Are you planning to apply for a job or for admission to a college or university any time soon?
If so, you might want to consider creating a second Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram account to show to your prospective employer or school while you’re going through the application / interview process.
Why? Because most everyone posts things on social media that have the potential to offend half of the country’s population.
It makes no difference what your political and personal views are. Roughly half the country is virtually guaranteed to be put off by them.
If the person reviewing your application happens to belong to the “offended” group you could well be denied an opportunity that you otherwise would have been offered.
That might not be fair, but such is life in today’s world.
All you have to do is create the new account and populate it with a few generic posts that aren’t likely to offend anyone. We all like cute puppies and kittens, right?
Then temporarily deactivate your real account(s) and give the URL(s) to the to the interviewer if you’re asked to provide them.
Once you’ve been hired for the job or accepted for admission you can reactivate your real account(s) and delete the temporary one(s).
Just be careful not to “friend” or “follow” your new boss or your professors if you find out their views are dramatically different from yours.

No, this isn’t exactly a tech item, but if you opt for something like this instead of a home that’ll set you back hundreds of thousands of dollars, you’ll be able to afford a lot more of the awesome tech gadgets you love!
What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by declaring your independence from sky-high mortgage and rent payments?
