Today’s featured tech tip….
How to ask Google if a website is safe
These days it seems like there’s a malicious website lurking around every virtual corner of the Internet. That’s why it pays to play it safe when you encounter a link to a site you’re unfamiliar with.
One easy way to check to see if a given website contains malicious or otherwise dangerous code is to ask Google. And it’s really easy to do…
Just type (or copy and paste) the following into the Google search box (be sure to substitute the domain for the site in question in place of example.com):
https://transparencyreport.google.com/safe-browsing/search?url=example.com
Google will immediately tell you if their bots found any malicious code on that site.
For example, let’s say someone you know said you really need to check out DigiKey.com. This is what you would type into the Google search box:
https://transparencyreport.google.com/safe-browsing/search?url=digikey.com
While Google isn’t perfect in regards to this test, they are really, really good at finding and flagging malicious content. Just sayin’.
